Here are some of the common land measurement units used in India.

 

That commonly depends on the State, various terms are used across the nation to denote the area of landed property. In order to better understand the offer of a seller, it always has advice that you have an idea of the common land measurement units used in India.

 

Hectares, acres, squares, meters, and square yards (Gaj) are some of the common land measurement units used across India. While Bigha and Marala are commonly used in the North, terms such as Cent, Guntha, and Ground belong to the South. Difference between a Plot and a Ground

While a plot refers to a piece of land, irrespective of its size, a ground is a land area measuring 2400 sq ft. The land documents, wherein the land is divided into layouts, will usually give the measurement in-ground or square feet. 

 

Finding the area of your property

The land is bifurcated into residential plots after making the necessary provision for roads, parks, schools, hospitals, markets, and other amenities. The number and size of the plot can be derived from the layout sketch in the case of a resale property, you can find the details of the property including in the area Sale deed.

 

In that case in the residential property, the area is usually given in the form of square Feet. in the case of agricultural lands, the property area is mentioned in terms of Acres or in a Hectares. In order to measure any land size, you need to multiply the length and the width of the available land. 

 

There are broadly used terms with respect to units of land measurement. But there are many units associated with a state that we will be seeing from now on.
 

1. North-East India:

 

  • The people of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Tripura can measure any land in “Dhur”. Again, this Dhur varies size depending on the state.

  • In the state of Assam, West Bengal, and in Madhya Pradesh measure any land in “Kattha” is used. 

  • People in West Bengal measure land in “Chatak”

 

2. North India

 

  • In the state of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana can use “Gaj” to measure any land. 

  • In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Asam, Madhya Pradesh can be used as “Bigha”.

  • “Biswa” is commonly used in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh.

  • “Killa” can be used to denote an acre of land in Punjab and Haryana.

  • “Ghumao” is also one other measurement unit used to measure an acre of land in Himachal Pradesh.

  • “Maria” is used in Punjab and Haryana.

 

3. South India

 

  • “Ankanam” is used to denote 72 square feet of land and is commonly used in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

  • People in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka also use the “Gunta” measurement unit.

  • “Ground” used in Tamil Nadu, refers to Square Feet of land and is widely used for land measuring purposes.

  • “Cent” is used in Kerala to measure any land.
